Miami Featured Artist Entry: AMY SCHISSEL

Select solo shows include: “Matter,” Centre d’Exposition Imager, Gatineau, Quebec (2010); “Tracking,” Visby Sjalso Studios, Gotland, Sweden (2009). Select Group Exhibitions include: Papier 12 Contemporary Art Fair, Montreal (2012); RBC Canadian Painting Competition Finalists Exhibition, Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta (2011).

The Artist in Her Own Words:

The constant presence of digital technology in a media-intoxicated culture supplies the subconscious with an onslaught of virtual and synthetic imagery, to which the human imagination has adapted. Examining the social ramifications of this altered state of the imagination became the seed for my most recent body of work. While I investigate ways to represent the progressively dematerialized quality of our technologically and digitally inundated world, I aim to reinvigorate traditional abstraction with drawings and painting paintings formally and conceptually relevant to a data-driven environment.

Miami Featured Artist Entry: FRANCISCO MORENO

Francisco Moreno was born in Mexico City, Mexico. He is an MFA candidate at RISD, Providence, RI. Recent Solo show: Las Noticias, Curbs & Stoops, Westbury, NY 2012. Recent group shows include: Hecho en Dallas, Latino Cultural Center, Dallas, Texas (2010); Best of the North East MFA, The Helen Day Art Center, Stowe, Vermont (2012).

The Artist in His Own Words:

In my paintings, and installations I confront anxieties about the role of painting in the information age. Using media saturated iconography and news headlines as source material, I explore the contradictions of American identity, raise questions about the value of labor, and considers how living in the media age shapes our understanding of personal and collective history.

THE ARTIST IN HIS OWN WORDS: My father was a cabinetmaker, so I learned at an early age how to use tools and to make things. The industrial process and everyday objects reveal to me interesting and sometimes obtuse aspects of the human condition on this earth.

Time has always figured prominently in my work.  Often, I meld static sculpture with a kinetic element such as shifting lights or a video piece.

My work is a quest for the truth. Always, I try to keep sight of the humor in life.

Ananda Cavalli is a Brooklyn, NY based contemporary artist. She received her MFA from Parsons the New School for Design, New York, NY, and has exhibited @ Cooper Union Residency Exhibition (NY, NY), Greenpoint Gallery (BK, NY), and the Thomas Werner Gallery (NY, NY).

The Artist in her own words: “In my current work I am creating photographic composites by interweaving twenty-nine frames caught by video head-cam while I whirl like a dervish. Alluding to trauma, mourning, and healing, my pieces negotiate the moments and processes in life which are difficult yet transformative.”
